 What is WAP? Menu

The wireless industry came up with the idea of WAP. The point of this standard was to show internet contents on wireless clients, like mobile phones.

  • WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol

  • WAP is an application communication protocol

  • WAP is used to access services and information

  • WAP is inherited from Internet standards

  • WAP is for handheld devices such as mobile phones

  • WAP is a protocol designed for micro browsers

  • WAP enables the creating of web applications for mobile devices.

  • WAP uses the mark-up language WML (not HTML)

 The Wireless Application Protocol Menu

The WAP protocol is the leading standard for information services on wireless terminals like digital mobile phones.

The WAP standard is based on Internet standards (HTML, XML and TCP/IP). It consists of a WML language specification, a WMLScript specification, and a Wireless Telephony Application Interface (WTAI) specification.

WAP is published by the WAP Forum, founded in 1997 by Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, and Unwired Planet. Forum members now represent over 90% of the global handset market, as well as leading infrastructure providers, software developers and other organizations.

 WAP Micro Browsers Menu

To fit into a small wireless terminal, WAP uses a Micro Browser.

A Micro Browser is a small piece of software that makes minimal demands on hardware, memory and CPU. It can display information written in a restricted mark-up language called WML.

The Micro Browser can also interpret a reduced version of JavaScript called WMLScript.

 What is WML? Menu

WML stands for Wireless Markup Language. It is a mark-up language inherited from HTML, but WML is based on XML, so it is much stricter than HTML.

WML is used to create pages that can be displayed in a WAP browser. Pages in WML are called DECKS. Decks are constructed as a set of CARDS.

 What is WMLScript? Menu

WML uses WMLScript to run simple code on the client. WMLScript is a light JavaScript language. However, WML scripts are not embedded in the WML pages. WML pages only contains references to script URLs. WML scripts need to be compiled into byte code on a server before they can run in a WAP browser.

Now Playing On Your Cell Phone
Advertisers are jumping on the mobile marketing bandwagon. Will subscribers join them? - By Olga Kharif

Snapshot of the U.S. Wireless Market February, 2002

UPOC conducts exhaustive quantitative and qualitative research on the U.S. mobile market.  In October/November 2001, Upoc and Frank N. Magid & Associates collaborated on a survey of a nationally representative sample of over 1100 respondents aged 12 and over.

Following are a few highlights from this study. Sources for all information contained herein, unless otherwise noted: Upoc / Frank N. Magid & Associates, November 2001; U.S. Census Bureau Mobile phone penetration has now topped 50% by a sizeable margin, and other devices are seeing small but significant adoption:

58% own a mobile phone (even split male-female)

13% own a beeper or one-way pager

6% own a PDA

4% own a two-way pager

63% of Americans 12+ own a mobile device

Base: 12+ year olds: Million and Counting

As penetration rates have passed 50% among the coveted 12-17 segment, mobile has become a viable medium to reach the teen market:

50.9% own a mobile phone

5.5% own a two-way pager

7.3% own a PDA or personal organizer

There are nearly 12 million teens with mobile phones

Base: 12-17 year old

Price drops in mobile service have in many cases made mobile phones
cheaper than students campus lines.  This trend among others has led to
some impressive penetration rates:

61.2% own a mobile phone

6% own a two-way pager

9% own a PDA

10% already use the wireless internet

So far there are 16.5 million 18-24 year olds with mobile phones

Base: 18-24 year olds

Young adults show very high penetration rates as well:

60.4% of 25-29 year olds own a mobile phone

A staggering 68.5% of 30-34 year olds own a mobile phone

There are 23.8 million young adults who have mobile phones

Base: 25-34 year olds

35-54 and 55+ year olds have similarly high device penetration rates:
62% of 35-54 year olds own a mobile phone (51.3 million people)
50% of 55+ year olds own a mobile phone (29.6 million people)
Base: 35+ year olds

Mobile ownership and usage are very high among these market segments; for example, among 12-34 year olds:

White mobile phone ownership is 57%

Hispanic mobile phone ownership is 56% and two-way pager ownership is 8.2%

African-American mobile phone ownership is 74% and two-way pager ownership is 12%

The trend-leading African-American and Hispanic youth markets similarly show very high penetration rates.  Among 12-24 year olds of those backgrounds:

58.7% own a mobile phone

11.1% own a two-way pager

Base: African-American and/or Hispanic 12-34 / 12-24 year olds

We asked current mobile phone owners about their willingness to accept and intention to use wireless coupons:

44% of 12+ mobile phone owners somewhat / very likely to use wireless coupons or special offers

59% of mobile phone owners 18-24 somewhat / very likely to use wireless coupons or special offers

Hypothetical example  Fr: Old Navy
10% off ALL non-sale items until 5p tonight! Just show this code: 1XLr87

79% of African-Americans aged 12-34 somewhat / very likely to use wireless coupons or special offers

61% of Hispanics aged 12-34 somewhat / very likely to use wireless coupons or special offers

By 2005, Analysys forecasts that more than half of the predicted 1.1 billion mobile subscribers will be accessing Internet services from their handsets, with mobile portals earning more than $1 billion from advertising and commissions. Established and start-up companies alike are moving quickly to take advantage of this growth, but the report suggests there are no easy pickings.

"These are not huge numbers considering how many companies are targeting the market," said Katrina Bond, lead author of the report. "Mobile portals and wireless ASPs will need to build their customer bases quickly because start-ups without substantial financial backing risk running out of cash reserves before sustainable revenues from transaction commissions and advertising can be achieved."

A report by The Strategis Group predicted that there will be 25 million wireless portal users in the US in the next five years. Approximately 34 percent of wireless users surveyed by The Strategis Group expressed an interest in using a wireless portal service, and most of them expressed an interest in receiving advertising in exchange for a price discount.

Mobile portals provide an interface through which mobile users can access Internet content quickly and easily. Wireless ASPs (WASPs) give access to centrally hosted applications such as mobile staff-management software, e-mail or games. In addition to advertising and commission revenues, applications targeted at individuals, many of which will be offered through portals, could generate additional revenues of $1.8 billion by 2005, according to Analysys. Business-focused WASPs could generate $2.1 billion in revenues by the same time.

VIEW EXAMPLES  OF TEXT ALERTS BELOW!

Why use text messaging?  - Text messaging is mostly included in most cell phone plans so consumers may respond to your campaign at no extra cost to them. We know consumers don’t carry telephone books, flyers, coupons, or remember an 60 second commercial in detail. Therefore, a simple text message may help consumers remember your company or advertisement and respond instantly. A text message may also include a web link for the consumer to access on their mobile phone.

What are Text Alerts? - When consumers reply or make a request according to your promotion they receive an text message or alert that we send from your company. Text messaging works best with your advertisement, commercial, stationery, event, fund-raiser or web site by getting an immediate response and collecting data for future campaigns. One concert use a Text-to-Win campaign and got 3,000 responses. It also help an music artist sell more CD's in stores by providing a discount.

Text Message Campaign - Use text message campaigns to collect phone numbers to either contact consumers who responded, requested or registered to your text campaign or for future use.  After your campaign or advertisement your company can send another campaign or updates to members or registries depending on your company needs.

What is a short code? - Short code otherwise known as (SMS) Short Message Service is a facility of sending short messages.  For example to receive a joke send a text message to short code: 85067 with message JOKE. (This is an example only and not to be used).  To set up an short code campaign requires a number to setup with a keyword so when consumer uses that keyword a text message is sent back to cell phone. This service usually takes 3-6 weeks to setup and cost over $3,000. Our Text Messaging Service via i2go.net is used without the large fees and setup time. (See below).

What type of text message campaigns are being used now?

Sample Coupon Text:
Old Navy 10% off All Non-Sale Items until 5pm! Just show this code: 1Xle82,

Sample Text Ad: This Wed Come to Jazz Café, 3455 Main, St. $5.00 after 10pm, 713-455-6654,
